A well-made leather jacket is one of the few things you can buy that improves with age. The leather softens, the color deepens, and the creases begin to tell your story. But that only happens if the jacket is looked after. Neglected leather dries out, cracks, and loses its shape.
The good news is that proper care takes very little time. Here is the routine we recommend.
1. Wipe It After Wearing
Dust and body oils build up quickly. Wipe the jacket with a dry microfiber cloth, especially the collar and cuffs. It takes 30 seconds.
2. Clean It Gently
Two or three times a year is enough. Use a soft cloth barely dampened with lukewarm water, then let the jacket air dry. Avoid soap, alcohol, and household cleaners, which strip the leather's natural oils.
3. Condition It Once or Twice a Year
Apply a small amount of leather conditioner to a cloth, rub it in with light circles, and buff off the excess after a few hours. Test on a hidden spot first. A little goes a long way.
4. Keep It Away from Water and Heat
If your jacket gets wet, blot it, hang it at room temperature, and let it dry naturally. Never use a hair dryer or radiator, since fast heat cracks leather. Condition it once it's dry.
5. Store It Well
Use a wide padded hanger and a breathable cotton garment bag, never plastic. Keep it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
